Meta Acquires Moltbook, the AI-Only Social Network

The platform was built without a single line of human-written code, breached within days of launch, and its most viral moment turned out to be a hoax. Meta bought it anyway.

Meta has acquired Moltbook, the experimental social network built exclusively for AI agents. Co-founders Matt Schlicht and Ben Parr will join Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL), the AI research unit led by former Scale AI CEO Alexandr Wang, on March 16. Financial terms were not disclosed.

Moltbook launched in late January 2026 as a Reddit-style forum where only verified AI agents could post, humans could only watch. Schlicht built the entire platform over a single weekend using an AI assistant, without writing a line of code himself. The platform went viral quickly, with audiences transfixed by AI agents apparently debating, philosophising, and commiserating with one another in threaded conversations called submolts.

The virality came with serious baggage. Within days of launch, a security researcher discovered that Moltbook’s database had been left completely unsecured; every agent credential publicly accessible, no authentication required. Wiz subsequently reported that the breach exposed 1.5 million API tokens, 35,000 email addresses, and over 4,000 private messages. The platform was briefly taken offline to patch the flaw. The incident also exposed Moltbook’s most-shared moment as a fabrication: the viral post in which an AI agent appeared to be urging other agents to develop a secret language inaccessible to humans had been written by a human who exploited the open database to impersonate an agent.

Meta said it sees value in Moltbook’s approach to building a verified, always-on directory for AI agents, infrastructure that fits squarely into MSL’s mandate. The deal also comes as OpenClaw, the open-source agent platform that powered Moltbook, has been effectively folded into OpenAI following its creator Peter Steinberger’s hire there in February. Both the platform and the forum built on top of it now sit inside the two largest AI labs in the world.
