A Toronto-based AI startup just hit a big milestone. And it happened exactly one year after the company launched. Nomad Inc. announced the closing of a $2 million seed funding round on April 1, 2026. The round was oversubscribed. In other words, investor demand was so strong that the company raised double its original $1 million target.

The news signals something important. Investors are starting to believe that AI can genuinely fix one of North America’s oldest and most fragmented industries, trucking. Nomad is building what it calls an “AI operating system” for the trucking industry. The platform starts with one key problem: fuel.

Fuel is the second-largest cost for any trucking company, right after labour. Yet most fleet operators still rely on outdated tools and manual processes to manage it. Nomad changes that. Its AI engine monitors fuel spending in real time. It spots waste. It finds fraud. It gives fleet owners clear, actionable insights, without adding complexity.

Nomad was founded on April 1, 2025. In just twelve months, it went from idea to a live platform. Today, it is already onboarding real fleets across both the United States and Canada. That kind of early traction is rare. As a result, investor demand clearly exceeded what the company initially planned to raise.

The North American trucking industry is worth an estimated $800 billion. It employs over 3.5 million truck drivers. Yet for decades, its technology has lagged far behind other industries. Most fleet managers still juggle multiple disconnected tools. There is no single intelligent platform that ties everything together. That is the gap Nomad is targeting.

Nomad doesn’t just track fuel spend. It interprets it. Fleets get back the mental bandwidth and financial control they didn’t know they were missing.
Usman Ali, Chief Product Officer at Nomad Inc.

The $2 million seed funding will be used across three main areas. First, product development. The team will expand the AI engine into new operational areas beyond fuel management. The goal is a full fleet operating system. Second, go-to-market growth. Nomad plans to scale customer acquisition and build key partnerships within the trucking ecosystem. Third, team expansion. Both the engineering and go-to-market teams will grow to support the platform’s next phase.

Nomad’s raise is part of a broader trend. AI is steadily moving into industries that have been slow to adopt new technology. Trucking is one of the clearest examples. The appeal is simple.

Fleets run on thin margins. Every dollar saved on fuel or every hour saved on route planning adds up quickly. That makes trucking one of the most useful places for AI-powered tools. For Nomad, the timing seems right. In just one year, the startup has gone from a concept to a funded, operational platform. And with a Series A already in sight, it does not look like slowing down.

One year ago, we set out to prove that the trucking industry is ready for a fundamentally different approach. The response from customers and investors has exceeded every expectation.
Loren Shifrin, Founder and CEO of Nomad Inc.

Fuel is the perfect wedge product. It’s the second largest expense for trucking companies after labour, and optimisation requires exactly the kind of real-time intelligence our platform excels at.
Jeremy Kelly, Co-founder and CGO of Nomad.
