OpenAI’s Sam Altman and Anthropic’s Dario Amodei skipped a symbolic handshake at India’s AI Impact Summit, turning a photo op into a viral moment.

What was meant to be a show of global unity at the India AI Impact Summit in New Delhi quickly became one of the most-talked-about moments in recent AI history.

On February 19, 2026, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi hosted the summit’s marquee day at Bharat Mandapam, with over a dozen of the world’s top AI leaders on stage, including Google CEO Sundar Pichai, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, and Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. After keynote addresses, Modi invited all the leaders to raise their hands in a symbolic chain, representing a collective commitment to building inclusive and multilingual AI.

Every leader obliged, except Altman and Amodei, who stood next to each other but visibly avoided physical contact. Instead of joining hands, both raised individual fists, a moment quickly noticed by the audience and captured on camera.

The clip went instantly viral on X (formerly Twitter). Startup founders and investors flooded the platform with commentary. One quip read: “AGI arrives the day Dario and Sam hold hands.” Andreessen Horowitz investor Justine Moore shared the photo with the caption: “When you’re forced to do a group project with your opp.”

Altman later tried to defuse the moment in a video interview with Moneycontrol, saying he was “confused” and “wasn’t sure what we were supposed to be doing.” Anthropic declined to comment.

The awkwardness reflects a rivalry that runs deeper than business. Amodei co-founded Anthropic in 2021 after leaving OpenAI over concerns about the pace and direction of AI development. In the weeks leading up to the summit, Anthropic had aired Super Bowl ads taking a veiled swipe at OpenAI’s plans to introduce ads, and Altman had publicly called Anthropic “dishonest” and “authoritarian” in response.

At the summit, both leaders gave substantive speeches. Amodei warned of AI’s serious risks, including economic displacement and misuse by governments. Altman expressed optimism about India’s growing role in AI and said the country is not only adopting AI but also emerging as a major force in shaping the future. Separately, Anthropic recently opened a new office in Bengaluru, its second in Asia after Tokyo and noted India is its second-largest market for Claude globally.
