US-based artificial intelligence firm Anthropic has appointed tech policy expert Amlan Mohanty to lead its policy and external affairs efforts in India, marking a significant step in the company’s expansion strategy in one of its fastest-growing markets.

Mohanty announced the move in a LinkedIn post, stating he was “thrilled” to join the company and highlighting Anthropic’s “safety-first approach” to AI development. He noted that his early experience within the firm has reinforced his belief in the transformative potential of artificial intelligence, while also highlighting the need for thoughtful risk management.

“India is key to the future of AI, the scale, diversity and potential for impact are unmatched,” Mohanty said, adding that solutions built in India could be replicated globally.

The appointment comes as Anthropic deepens its focus on India, which it considers a critical market for growth and policy engagement. The company is looking to build partnerships across government, industry, and civil society as it establishes an early regulatory and operational footprint in the country.

Mohanty brings extensive experience in technology policy, having previously worked on public policy and government affairs at Google India and served as an associate fellow at the Center for Responsible AI (CeRAI).

Anthropic, known for its Claude family of AI models, has identified India as its second-largest market, with a rapidly growing developer ecosystem contributing to advanced AI use cases.

The move shows increasing competition among global AI firms to establish policy influence and market presence in India, as the country emerges as a key battleground for AI development and regulation.
