Google Releases Offline AI Dictation App for iOS With No Subscription Fee

Built on Gemma-based speech recognition, the new app from Google processes voice locally and takes direct aim at paid dictation tools charging up to $15 a month.
Google released a free iOS dictation application on Monday that processes speech entirely on-device, entering a market currently dominated by subscription-based tools such as Wispr Flow and Willow.
The app, called Google AI Edge Eloquent, uses Gemma-based automatic speech recognition models downloaded to the user’s device. Once those models are installed, the app transcribes speech in real time, strips filler words such as “um” and “ah,” and copies cleaned text to the user’s clipboard. No internet connection is required for core functionality.

Google described the product in its App Store listing as an app “engineered to bridge the gap between natural speech and professional, ready-to-use text,” adding that it “automatically edits out ‘ums,’ ‘uhs,’ and mid-sentence self-corrections, outputting clean, accurate prose.” The company did not issue a press release or public announcement alongside the launch.
The app includes four text-transformation options: Key Points, Formal, Short, and Long that restructure a completed transcription into different formats. The History tab stores past sessions, and the usage dashboard displays word count and words-per-minute.
A toggle in the app switches between two processing modes. In fully offline mode, all audio stays on the device, and no data is sent to it’s servers. In cloud mode, Gemini models handle text cleanup remotely. Users can also import frequently used terms, names, and jargon from their Gmail accounts or enter custom vocabulary manually to improve transcription accuracy.
The move comes as AI-powered voice tools attract growing user interest alongside improvements in on-device speech models. Wispr Flow and Willow each charge $15 a month and route audio through cloud servers. SuperWhisper offers local processing at $85 a year. Eloquent carries no subscription fee and imposes no usage cap, according to its App Store description.
The App Store listing references Android integration, including the ability to set the app as the system-wide default keyboard, but the app had not appeared on Google Play as of Monday.
“AI Edge” is established branding for on-device AI experiences. Eloquent joins Google AI Edge Gallery, an existing application that allows users to download and run the latest Gemma models locally on iOS and Android.
