IIT Madras Professor Joins UN AI Panel

IIT Madras professor B. Ravindran has been appointed to the United Nations’ Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence.

Professor B. Ravindran of Indian Institute of Technology Madras has been appointed to the United Nations’ Independent International Scientific Panel on Artificial Intelligence.

The panel brings together experts from different countries to study how AI is developed and used. It will provide scientific input to support global discussions on AI safety, ethics and public policy.

Ravindran teaches in the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at IIT Madras. His work focuses on artificial intelligence and machine learning, especially reinforcement learning. Over the years, he has also been involved in mentoring startups and contributing to national AI initiatives.

The United Nations set up the panel to ensure that decisions around AI are guided by technical knowledge and independent research. The group will examine how AI affects societies, economies and governments. It is expected to offer recommendations based on evidence rather than political interests.

Ravindran’s appointment places an Indian academic among a select group of global researchers shaping international conversations on AI. His inclusion reflects India’s growing presence in global AI research and policy discussions.

The panel’s work is expected to inform future international cooperation on artificial intelligence, particularly in areas such as transparency, accountability and equitable access to technology.
