OpenAI is hiring an experienced communications professional to join its Platform & Research Communications team in San Francisco, California. The role follows a hybrid schedule, with three days per week in the office, and relocation assistance is available. The compensation range is $185,000 to $205,000 plus equity.

The position will work closely with the Research Communications Lead and collaborate with research, engineering, policy, product, safety, legal and marketing teams. The primary responsibility is to shape how OpenAI’s scientific work is understood by researchers, journalists, policymakers and the broader public. The role covers communications related to foundational model advances, applied science collaborations, research publications and model releases.

The selected candidate will develop clear and credible external narratives around OpenAI’s research roadmap, breakthroughs and long-term scientific direction. This includes translating complex technical work into accessible language without oversimplifying or overstating impact. The role also involves helping define and reinforce OpenAI’s point of view on key research areas such as reasoning, alignment, interpretability and scientific discovery.

Media engagement is a core part of the job. The role requires building relationships with science, technology and business journalists, managing proactive and reactive media outreach, and preparing researchers and executives for interviews, briefings and public appearances. The candidate will also help plan communications for major research papers, model launches and scientific initiatives, ensuring that public messaging remains accurate, evidence-based and aligned with policy and safety considerations.

The position includes anticipating reputational and scientific risks. The communications manager will identify potential areas of misinterpretation, develop mitigation strategies and prepare guidance for high-profile or sensitive research topics. The role requires strong judgment in handling complex and high-stakes narratives, especially as research, product development and public debate intersect.

OpenAI is seeking someone with at least seven years of experience in research, science or technology communications. Candidates should have experience working directly with scientists or engineers, strong writing and editing skills, and a solid understanding of AI, machine learning or related scientific domains. Experience with academic publishing, peer review or research collaborations is considered valuable.
