Artificial intelligence is being used to detect road damage faster across India\u2019s expanding highway network, covering everything from potholes to broken streetlights.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

India\u2019s highway authority is turning to artificial intelligence to improve how road conditions are tracked and maintained across its expanding network. NHAI will deploy an AI-powered dashcam system across approximately 40,000 kilometers of highways, using cameras mounted on patrol vehicles to identify more than 30 types of defects, including potholes, cracks and damaged infrastructure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The system is designed to catch a wide range of issues. On the road surface, it will flag potholes, deep grooves and cracking. Along the roadside, it will identify faded lane markings, damaged crash barriers and streetlights that are no longer working. It will also monitor for illegal encroachments, unauthorized signs and vehicles parked where they shouldn’t be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

To ensure nothing is missed at night, at least one survey per month will be carried out after dark, specifically to check how well road signs, markings and highway lighting are performing once the sun goes down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For monitoring, the country has been divided into five zones, each feeding data into a centralized platform that will allow officials to compare road conditions over time and track whether repairs have been completed. The AI-generated findings will also flow into NHAI’s broader data system, giving officials a single place to view defects and ensure they are fixed on schedule.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The announcement comes as India continues to expand its highway network at pace, making it harder to maintain thousands of kilometers of highways in usable condition. Traditional inspection methods have struggled to keep up with the scale, making the shift toward automated monitoring a practical response to a growing problem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
