New platform, CiteSentinel, aims to help lawyers detect fabricated or inaccurate legal citations generated by AI systems before they reach the courtroom.<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A growing number of courts are sanctioning attorneys for submitting legal filings containing fabricated case citations generated by AI tools. Now, legal tech startup BrentWorks is launching a platform designed to help law firms catch those errors before they become legal or reputational liabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Los Angeles-based company on Thursday introduced CiteSentinel, a verification tool that scans legal documents for potentially hallucinated or inaccurate citations. The platform checks whether cited cases, statutes, and legal authorities actually exist and flags references that may be fabricated, misstated, or incorrectly attributed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The launch comes amid increasing adoption of generative AI tools across legal workflows, including research, drafting, and document preparation. While AI systems have helped reduce turnaround times for legal work, they have also introduced new risks tied to hallucinated information presented with apparent confidence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Several lawyers and law firms in the United States have faced sanctions or public scrutiny over the past two years after submitting AI-generated filings containing non-existent cases or incorrect legal references.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BrentWorks says CiteSentinel is intended for both AI-assisted drafting and broader document review processes. Law firms can use the platform to verify internal filings, review work prepared by junior staff or contractors, and analyze opposing counsel\u2019s submissions for inaccurate citations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Unlike traditional legal research platforms focused on finding case law, CiteSentinel is positioned as a verification layer aimed at ensuring cited authorities are real and correctly referenced before documents are filed in court.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The emergence of tools like CiteSentinel highlights a shift in enterprise AI adoption, where companies are increasingly investing in oversight, validation, and compliance systems alongside generative AI deployment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

BrentWorks was founded by technology attorney Brent Britton and technologist Brent Hunter. CiteSentinel is the company\u2019s first publicly launched product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
