Global insurtech funding held strong at $1.63 billion in the first quarter of 2026. AI-focused companies captured a record 95.2% of all capital deployed. The sector is now moving beyond simple digitization toward a new frontier<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Global insurtech investment remained strong in the first quarter of 2026. Total funding reached $1.63 billion. That figure is a marginal dip from $1.67 billion in Q4 2025. Even so, both quarters rank as the strongest back-to-back funding periods since Q3 2022. The results indicates a clear and sustained return of capital to the sector after nearly three years of flat quarterly funding.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, the makeup of that capital has shifted dramatically. AI is no longer just a feature. It is the entire point. AI-focused insurtech companies secured 95.2% of all Q1 2026 funding the highest share ever recorded in a single quarter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In concrete terms, those companies raised $1.55 billion across 68 deals. The average deal size stood at $25.79 million, exceeding the overall insurtech average for the period. Furthermore, every one of the ten largest funding rounds in the quarter involved a company with an AI focus. That pattern leaves little room for ambiguity about where investor confidence lies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Q4 2025 and Q1 2026 ranked as the highest for global InsurTech funding since Q3 2022, bucking the now three-year trend of quarterly funding of around $1 billion. This provides further evidence that there is a return of capital into this space and strikingly, 95.2% of Q1 2026 InsurTech funding went to AI-labelled companies, underscoring the industry’s commitment to this transformative technology. AI and InsurTech are now almost synonymous. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

As an industry, we must embrace the opportunities AI presents while addressing the challenges it brings. The future of AI liability insurance isn’t coming; it’s already here, and it’s up to us to lead the way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The average size of early-stage deals also expanded considerably. It rose 278.8% year-on-year to $14.06 million. That jump suggests investors are placing larger bets on younger companies entering the AI-insurance space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In other words, the next wave of AI-native insurance startups is already forming, and capital is following.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By contrast, property and casualty insurtech funding fell 31% to $907.14 million compared to the prior quarter. However, the average P&C deal size held steady at $20.2 million, indicating that deal quality remained consistent even as volume dipped.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, insurers and insurtechs are now actively building products to cover a new set of exposures. These include algorithmic bias, data quality failures, liability arising from automated decisions, and losses caused by AI systems deployed in healthcare, financial services, and autonomous vehicles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He also called out the limitations of current evaluation methods. Gallagher Re warns that empirical benchmarks tested on static datasets are poor proxies for real-world loss. For a credible AI insurance market to scale, the industry must transition toward behavioral evaluation assessing how AI systems actually perform in live environments, not just in controlled tests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The speed of AI’s evolution is extraordinary, but it brings new risks alongside opportunities. The emerging landscape of third-party AI liability insurance is not just an interesting sideline; it’s a fast-growing necessity, poised to mirror the explosive growth we’ve witnessed in the cyber reinsurance market. The silent risk of AI is becoming audible, and ignoring it is no longer an option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Cumulative global insurtech investment has now crossed $60 billion since 2012, with approximately a quarter of that flowing to AI-focused firms.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, market participants face practical decisions. Underwriters need new models to price AI-related exposures. Brokers need to understand how existing cyber policies do or do not respond to AI failures. Regulators are developing governance frameworks that will affect insurability. And carriers must decide whether to develop standalone AI liability products or integrate them into existing digital risk lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
