Amazon Launches AI Audio Q&A Feature Directly on Product Pages

Amazon has launched Join the Chat, an AI-powered audio Q&A tool on product pages, letting U.S. shoppers ask real-time questions by voice or text.
Amazon on Tuesday launched a new AI-powered feature that allows U.S. shoppers to ask questions about products and receive real-time, conversational audio responses all without leaving a product page. The feature, called “Join the Chat,” is an interactive extension of the company’s existing “Hear the Highlights” tool, which Amazon first tested in May 2025.
Together, they represent the retailer’s most ambitious push yet to transform passive product browsing into a two-way conversation. To use the feature, customers open the Amazon Shopping app, navigate to a product detail page and tap the “Hear the Highlights” button, which appears below the product image. From there, they can listen to a short audio overview of the product.
At any point during playback, they can tap a raised-hand icon to access “Join the Chat” and either type a question or ask one using their microphone.
The AI hosts pause to answer the question and then resume the episode where it left off, allowing shoppers to participate in the experience rather than simply listen to it. Importantly, the audio can be minimized at any time, and it continues playing while users browse elsewhere on Amazon.
Shoppers can ask specific questions such as whether a coffee maker is suited for beginners or whether a sweater feels itchy, based on customer reviews. Rather than giving generic answers, Amazon says the AI builds on previous responses to provide more relevant and helpful information, while also making sure not to repeat anything already covered.
Furthermore, each episode begins with an AI-generated script that adapts in real time to shoppers’ questions. Advanced text-to-speech technology then brings the responses to life, so the hosts reply naturally and match the tone and energy of the original episode, according to Amazon’s April 28 announcement.
The feature uses large language models to generate scripts, pulling from Amazon’s product catalog, customer reviews, and information from across the web, and then translating the content into short-form audio clips.
According to Amazon VP of Conversational Shopping Rajiv Mehta, the system is designed to feel adaptive rather than scripted. “The AI hosts incorporate the question into the conversation, deliver a tailored response grounded in product details, customer reviews and other publicly available information, and then seamlessly continue the episode,” Mehta said. “Customers aren’t interrupting the experience they’re part of it.
Join the Chat is now available on both iOS and Android devices for U.S. customers and is rolling out across millions of product detail pages where Hear the Highlights is already present. Not every product, however, currently includes an audio summary.
The launch does not exist in isolation. Rather, it builds on a growing suite of AI-driven tools Amazon has rolled out in recent years. These include Rufus, its generative AI assistant that helps customers research products and compare options; Interests, which continuously tracks and surfaces new items aligned with a shopper’s preferences; and “Help me decide,” which suggests products based on a person’s searches, browsing, and shopping history.
Taken together, the tools reflect Amazon’s broader bet that conversational AI not just search bars and star ratings will define the next chapter of online retail.
For consumers, the practical implication is significant. Instead of scrolling through lengthy product descriptions or parsing hundreds of reviews, shoppers can now simply ask a question and hear an answer in seconds. Moreover, the feature is designed to remember context, meaning follow-up questions build on what has already been discussed rather than starting over from scratch.
As generative AI continues to reshape how people shop online, Amazon’s latest move signals that voice and audio interfaces are moving well beyond smart speakers and directly into the heart of e-commerce.
