Anthropic is targeting a valuation of $900 billion, a figure that would surpass rival OpenAI, as the company moves toward a public listing later this year.

Anthropic has asked investors to submit allocation requests within 48 hours for a new funding round that could raise as much as $50 billion, people familiar with the matter told TechCrunch. The round is expected to close within two weeks.

The San Francisco-based artificial intelligence company is targeting a valuation of around $900 billion, according to sources cited by TechCrunch. Strong investor demand could push the final figure higher. If achieved, the valuation would more than double Anthropic’s $380 billion figure from its February 2026 round.

The raise is expected to be Anthropic’s final private fundraising before a planned initial public offering later this year, the sources said. The company is expected to make a definitive decision on the round and its valuation at a board meeting in May, one person told TechCrunch. Anthropic declined to comment.

Investor demand has outpaced the size of the round. One institutional investor prepared to commit up to $5 billion has yet to secure a meeting with Anthropic CFO Krishna Rao, according to a source cited by TechCrunch. Some early backers, particularly those who invested in 2024 or earlier, are not participating; they are waiting for a potential exit at the IPO instead.

The fundraising is driven in part by rising compute costs tied to Anthropic’s expanding AI operations. The company announced this month that its annual revenue run rate has surpassed $30 billion, up from roughly $9 billion at the end of 2025, per TechCrunch. One person with knowledge of the company’s financials told TechCrunch the current run rate is closer to $40 billion. A large portion of that revenue is attributed to Anthropic’s AI coding tools, including its Claude Code and Cowork platforms.

At a $900 billion valuation, Anthropic would match or surpass OpenAI, which closed a $122 billion round in February 2026 at an $852 billion post-money valuation.

Whether the IPO schedule changes based on market trends or the result of the board’s decision in May remains to be seen.
