xAI, the artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk, is developing a feature called Skills for its Grok chatbot that would allow users to create reusable instruction sets for automated tasks, according to leaked screenshots and early demonstrations reviewed by tech analyst Nima Owji.

The feature, not yet publicly released, would let users save a sequence of instructions, such as scanning AI headlines, summarizing top stories, and formatting output, and execute that sequence on demand or on a schedule. An early demo showed Grok generating a daily AI news briefing from a saved Skill without manual prompting.

A feature flag in Grok’s web interface, currently set to False, confirms the capability exists in the codebase but has not been enabled for users.UI mockups show fields for Name, Description, and Instruction, along with an import dialog that accepts .zip, .skill, and .md file formats.

The system is designed to operate within Grok’s 2 million-token context window, enabling it to handle multi-file inputs and complex operations in a single session, according to the same report. TestingCatalog described Skills as a more granular layer than xAI’s Custom Agents, which launched on March 4, 2026, allowing smaller, shareable instruction blocks rather than full agent configurations.

Skills are among the other personalization additions xAI has made to Grok in recent months. The company introduced Grok-powered Custom Timelines for Premium users, a feed curation tool spanning more than 75 topics, including finance and technology. An earlier custom instructions feature allowed users to set preferences for tone and response style, as confirmed by the company in its official product updates.

The move comes as competitors have expanded similar tooling. OpenAI has offered custom GPTs and memory features within ChatGPT. Anthropic has developed its Projects functionality, which organizes context across sessions. It is unclear when xAI plans to flip the Skills flag or publish official documentation on sharing permissions, security limits, or scheduled execution.

xAI has not issued a press release or blog post confirming Skills or a launch timeline as of May 11, 2026.
