Chromie Health Gets $2M to Modernize Hospital Staffing With AI

Chromie Health raised $2M in pre-seed funding led by AIX Ventures to expand its AI-powered nurse staffing platform, Chromie Dispatch.
Chromie Health, a New York-based health tech startup, has raised $2 million in pre-seed funding. AIX Ventures led the round. The company also launched Chromie Dispatch its flagship AI-powered nurse staffing agent alongside the announcement. The funding arrives at a critical time. U.S. hospitals face a worsening nursing shortage. The crisis costs the American economy an estimated $100 billion every year.
When a nurse calls out sick, hospital managers scramble. They send group texts. They flip through spreadsheets. They call staffing agencies, which often charge steep markups. The process is slow, manual, and expensive.
Chromie Health set out to replace this chaos. Its platform, Chromie Dispatch, works through simple SMS. When a shift opens, the AI agent texts qualified nurses. A nurse replies “YES” or “NO.” The system then picks the best match using a proprietary ranking algorithm. Alternatively, a manager can make the final call.
As a result, Chromie says it fills shifts 60 times faster than traditional methods. So far, the platform has filled more than 35,000 last-minute nursing shifts. What sets Chromie apart is its simplicity. Unlike most healthcare software, it requires no deep IT integration. It also does not touch any patient data.
One of the biggest reasons hospitals are excited about Chromie is that we require no IT integration, no patient data. We designed the system to be incredibly lightweight, easy to deploy and with nurses in mind.
Douglas Ford, CEO and co-founder of Chromie Health.
That ease of deployment has clearly resonated. The company currently has 750 hospitals on its waitlist. Ford, a Harvard alumnus with a background in quantum computing research, co-founded after a personal brush with the U.S. healthcare system. A nine-hour ER wait, he said, nearly cost him his life.

Alongside Ford, the team includes CTO Scott Tisoskey, who studied at Harvard and Penn medical schools and brings over eight years in hospital IT and research. CMO Dr. Patricia Ford is a Penn-trained critical care nurse and Medical Director of Penn’s Clinical Research Unit. Both Ford and Tisoskey are Forbes 30 Under 30 honorees in healthcare.
Chromie Health is building the iOS operating system for healthcare, an AI-native agent layer that orchestrates communication, coordination, and workforce operations across the hospital. By replacing fragmented legacy workflows with a seamless, no-code, SMS-native platform, Chromie has the potential to become foundational infrastructure for modern healthcare systems.
Krish Ramadurai, partner at AIX Ventures.
Chromie Health plans to use the fresh capital to grow its team. Additionally, the funds will support further development of a full suite of intelligent scheduling agents. The commercial rollout of Chromie Dispatch will also accelerate.
Furthermore, the company is already looking ahead to predictive tools, AI agents that can forecast staffing shortages before they happen. These funds will really help us to grow our team, help keep up with that demand, refine the product and make it even better than it already is.
The financial stakes for hospitals are staggering. According to research cited in JAMA, every additional patient assigned to a nurse increases the risk of patient death by 7%. On the cost side, replacing a single nurse costs hospitals approximately $88,000.
In this environment, tools that cut staffing time and reduce reliance on expensive agencies carry obvious appeal. Chromie Health is betting that AI delivered through something as simple as a text message can bring meaningful relief to a system under severe strain.
