The IPL franchise is using OpenAI tools for player data, auction strategy, ticket sales and content production as AI moves deeper into its operations.

Rajasthan Royals is expanding its use of OpenAI tools beyond cricket analytics, applying the technology across player data, auction strategy, ticketing, content production and other parts of its operations.

The franchise detailed its use of OpenAI in a case study published this week, while OpenAI India executive Pragya Misra separately highlighted the partnership, saying the tools are being used across “strategy, scouting, creativity, ticketing, and everyday operations.”

One example comes directly from Rajasthan Royals Director of Cricket and Head Coach Kumar Sangakkara. In a prompt shared by the franchise, Sangakkara asked ChatGPT: “Hey ChatGPT, show me data for Yashasvi Jaiswal in Match 53 from IPL 2023.”

The example reflects the franchise’s push to make large amounts of cricket data easier for coaches and analysts to access. Rajasthan Royals said it uses data from batting, bowling and other cricket technologies, which can be brought together through OpenAI APIs.

For Sangakkara, the value is not simply the amount of data available.

“It’s not about having the most amount of data. Its true worth and value is realised when you use it better and faster,” he said, according to Rajasthan Royals.

The franchise is also using OpenAI tools in its auction process. Its Super Selector programme invited students and other participants to develop strategies for building a 25-member Rajasthan Royals squad using OpenAI tools. The strongest teams presented their models and recommendations to Sangakkara and Giles Lindsay, and some of the ideas went on to inform player-purchase decisions.

Ticketing is another area where the technology is being applied. Rajasthan Royals has used Codex to build agents that analyse ticket sales, identify gaps and model how different sales levels could affect stadium occupancy. The insights can help the commercial team decide when to open additional stands or adjust pricing.

AI is also being used by the franchise’s creative teams. Rajasthan Royals said it has built an in-house generative AI studio and uses ChatGPT to develop concepts for photoshoot sets and backgrounds. Generative AI has also been used to create campaign visuals placing players in different destinations, reducing the need to send players on multiple physical shoots.

The partnership extends into the fan experience as well. OpenAI India’s Head of Marketing, Sheeladitya Mohanty, pointed to the possibility of more personalised cricket experiences, where new viewers could use AI to understand rules and tactics while experienced fans could explore deeper statistics, player matchups and historical data.

Rajasthan Royals has also linked its technology strategy to its scouting operation, including its identification of teenage batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi. The franchise has not said that AI directly discovered Sooryavanshi. Instead, it has described technology as one part of a broader scouting process involving data and its network of scouts.

The broader shift is significant because the technology is no longer confined to one analytics team. Coaches can query data, analysts can test auction scenarios, commercial teams can examine ticket sales and creative teams can develop campaign ideas using the same expanding set of tools.

For OpenAI, that breadth is what makes the Rajasthan Royals partnership notable. “The real advantage comes when AI moves beyond experimentation and becomes part of how an organisation thinks, creates, and makes decisions,” Misra wrote.

At Rajasthan Royals, however, the technology is positioned as support rather than a replacement for expertise. Coaches and other teams remain responsible for decisions, while AI is being used to make information easier to access, reduce repetitive work and speed up execution.
