Status AI Bags $17M to Reinvent Social Media With Entertainment

Status AI raises $17M from General Catalyst, Y Combinator, and others to build immersive, AI-powered social worlds where users play characters not just scroll.
Status AI announced Tuesday that it has raised $17 million in combined seed and Series A funding. The round drew backing from Abstract, General Catalyst, Union Square Ventures, Y Combinator, and LightShed Partners.
The raise marks a clear shift in how investors see the future of social media. Rather than building another scrollable feed, Status AI is betting on something more ambitious immersive, story-driven worlds powered by artificial intelligence.
For years, social media has worked the same way. Users scroll. They watch. They react. However, investors and founders behind Status AI argue that the era of passive entertainment is coming to an end. Furthermore, early AI social apps built around chatbot experiences as seen with Character.AI and Chai are already beginning to feel dated. Status AI wants to go further.
Status AI is a gamified social media app where users can play any character in any universe. Users first craft a persona and are then transported into a social world built around them.
In practice, that means a user can choose to be Snow White. Status then dynamically generates social media profiles for the seven dwarves, the evil stepmother, Prince Charming, and even random villagers all posting and interacting in character. Users engage through in-character posts inside a fully realized social media universe.
The goal is to amass followers, develop relationships with other characters, and complete unique milestones. CEO and co-founder Fai Nur describes herself as a “chronically online teenager.” She obsessed over music groups, TV shows, and movies. That upbringing, she says, shaped everything about Status.
A Harvard Law graduate and Y Combinator alumna from the Winter 2022 cohort, Nur previously worked at Facebook and Snapchat. When ChatGPT launched in 2022, she recognized a new possibility immediately.

She then brought in two co-founders. Amit Bhatnagar, who grew up building Minecraft games, joined alongside Pritesh Kadiwala. Together, the three began building Status AI. The platform is growing fast. Status has already seen more than 13 million worlds created, with more than 5 million character profiles metrics that suggest strong early engagement.
Moreover, its beta version reached 1 million users in just 19 days, making it one of the fastest-growing social apps ever launched. Nur also notes who is driving that growth. The funding round has drawn interest beyond Silicon Valley. Rich Greenfield, an investor in Status AI and partner at LightShed Partners, noted that the media world today needs platforms that encourage fans to live within the worlds they create.
Additionally, Nur argues that the next generation does not want to watch stories they want to engage with them and even live inside them. That distinction, she says, is the entire premise of the company. The fresh capital will be used to scale the platform and expand what Nur calls a new category: immersive social entertainment.
As AI becomes more sophisticated and costs continue to drop, Status may represent an early signal of a new entertainment category one that blurs the line between games, social media, and interactive storytelling.
